There's not a lot of depth to any of the characters, and I'm fairly certain it's intentional. Within this context, it's an accomplished horror story riffing on old tropes but with the kind of polish that makes even the nice parts feel horrible. What you see is what you get, basically.

It's a special kind of disappointment when I start watching a dystopian sci-fi flick only to realise a minute in that it's a YA adaptation. Add to that a ludicrous premise and plot holes so big a truck could drive through and you've got this ungodly mess.
