I just returned from another long day at the university. “Long” as in three lectures. Oh well. The last one was a literature lecture on 20th century British drama, and I couldn’t resist shooting a photo with my cameraphone. So, enjoy the blurry reality of university life:

Two cool things happened today: First, during a literature seminar, the person who did a presentation did this using a SimpleMepis Live CD and OpenOffice.org…how cool is that? When I asked him why he had chosen to do it this way, he said that it was his parents’ computer, and they only had an outdated version of PowerPoint, so he simply converted the presentation to the OOo format and off he went. Perfect!
Second cool thing was when I got on the the tram and after sitting down thought I’d somehow landed in MP3-alley. Including me, there were four people sitting more or less next to each other listening to music coming from one or the other MP3-player…one girl had some cube-like thing which looked quite good, the girl next to her sported a pink iPod Mini and the guy next to me had some flash-based MP3-stick. Well, and I had my Medion Jukebox. I don’t know abou you, but I think it’s amazing how MP3-players suddenly take over.
Today was the second day of the present semester, and once again I was reminded why I like university life. Attending lectures, walking through the halls of the main university building, buzzing with people excited to start their new independent life of being a student depending on parents or the state, having a grizzly coffee at the little university café, meeting friends and brothers in arms (well, sisters too…after all, it is International Women’s Day today), these are all things that make me feel…well, good. I’m actually DOING something.
Another great thing of course are the give-aways. Publishing houses trying to sell newspaper subscriptions, financial institutions trying to lure you into opening yet another student-account, they’re all out to get you. And most of the time they’ve got something for you to keep them in your memory. Today’s give-away (the bottle to the left, in case you haven’t noticed…or have noticed and been wondering what it was) is from yet another bank…I didn’t tell the person who handed it out that I already have an account with their bank (not that she would have cared, being just another student trying to earn some money). The drink, supposedly an “energy” drink, is aptly titled “Shark”, because it’s common knowledge that sharks are really energetic, especially when it comes to studying and opening accounts at financial institutions. Whatever. It’s still a good piece to start my new periodical…university give-aways. From now on I’ll post pictures of every little thing I get handed at the university…let’s see if it pays being a student.
I forgot to mention that the paper I referred to two days ago was actually written in its entirety in OpenOffice.org. Which I’m a bit proud of even. I don’t know why exactly, since there are probably people out there who have written papers in OOo when I didn’t even know how to pronounce the word butter. Or paper, for that matter. But still, I think it’s a little bit cool. And it did work out quite well too. The only thing I couldn’t figure out was how to get rid of the page number on my title page, but I worked around that. So, to end this little alibi posting, go and download OOo today!
Well, I’m done. And as always, after writing a paper within three days or less, I vowe to never again wait so long. Hell, from my experience I’m already waiting for the paper to be returned, because I didn’t use enough sources. Or didn’t indent my pragraphs the way they’re supposed to be indented. Or simply because it doesn’t have any substance at all, because every chapter is nothing else than a summary of another person’s study. But isn’t that what these seminar papers are about? To look at other people’s writings, quote as much as possible and hope to get it over with? Ach, I hate handing in papers. And I hate not being a diligent student. Which leads me to 43 things. I heard about this one before, but Christoph from engadgeted.net posted about his list, so I decided to give it a spin as well. Check out my list, containing one item at the moment, and then try it out yourself.
