Whoa

toshiba satellite

What can I say? I’m one happy pup.

Next steps:
* Wipe off Windows
* Install Kubuntu
* Remain in deep and everlasting gratitude to my wonderful sister who made this beast possible.

One becomes Two

In an attempt to abuse my massive readerbase to aid me in my sinister plans for world domination, I’ve taken the next logical step: I split my blog in two.

For all those of you who come here to read about my everyday exploits, rejoice! For from now on, that’s all you’re going to get here.

For those of you who value my learned view of all things technical, may it be the latest AJAX homepage, or yet another online feedreader, you will be happy to learn that from now on you won’t be diverted by my rants about medieval Bishops or crappy Austrian TV anymore.
Just head on over to tech.stormgrass, “The Excitement of Tech Stuff”, and enjoy.

Have a wonderful time, and don’t hesitate to leave a slew of emails congratulating me on my brave decision

Fluxiom and Box.net

I’ve been wanting to write a little bit about Fluxiom, Vienna based file storage and sharing app for a few days now. I was always too busy, and now Michael Arrington from TechCrunch is stealing my thunder. Read his review and you’ll have a good idea of what mine would have been like (only without the number crunching in the end…my research would have stopped after comparing prices).

The only thing I might have added was that the service I’m currently using, namely Box.net, seems to be doing it all right: They’ve got sharing, they’ve got tagging, there’s a mass upload feature (through a Java applet…Michael Arrington seemed to have missed that when he wrote in his review that no other service provides mass upload). The good thing about this approach compared to Fluxiom’s? No need to zip!
They are also a lot more generous with their space, giving away 1GB for free, and 5GB once you’ve referred five friends (which isn’t that difficult, really).

I’d have really loved to like Fluxiom (they are from Vienna after all), but as they are that outrageously priced and their basic plan doesn’t even provide the features that would actually make them different from Box.net (full-text search, version check), I’d be crazy to actually pay that much money.

Wordpress update

I just updated to Wordpress 2.0 and the newest revision of K2. As always there was a bit of CSS editing involved, all in all it wasn’t that bad.

Of course there are still things that make me cringe, but that’s not Wordpress’ fault, but rather my webhosting copany’s, namely that my site is extremely slow sometimes. So slow that I’m tempted to switch to some other company and pay more money. Considering how tight I always am, that means I’m really frsutrated.
Oh, and the new Rich Text Editor here in Wordpress really, really does suck. It’s from hell.

Waiting for Google calendar

Well, I feel like a total nerd because I waited all day on the 6th, expecting a message on Digg or Slashdot that Google Calendar had launched. Sure as hell, that message never appeared.

Now, I’m still waiting for this calendar thing to launch, and I don’t even know why. Maybe it’s because I’ve started using the GTD system, and am still on the lookout for a perfect calendar solution. Or maybe it’s because I’m desperately waiting for a new Google app that’s not just mediocre.

In the meantime, check out these new services:
* Rallypoint - write documents and share them. Very smooth and easy, AJAX abundant.
* Boltfolio - share all sorts of media. Sounds simple, and I guess it is.
* LookLater - it’s like social bookmarking, only that it’s really quite antisocial. Great for globally storing bookmarks.
