In which I finally present a new give-away

It has been a rather long while since the last give-away I received. Actually, the whole experiment hasn’t been as vibrant as I had imagined, but hey, that’s what experiments are for. Tor prove or disprove. In my case, the hypothesis of the thousand give-aways turning me into a rich man has been definitely disproven. Mainly because I give people angry looks when they approach me. Hell, someone could be trying to hand me 10,000 € in cash, and I’d never know. On the other hand, looking interested in each and everyone approaching me would probably turn me either into a homeless or a madman. Or quite possibly both.

Today I saw someone handing out something that looked like more than just a leaflet, so I paced my way just right so she could hand me one of those packages. And here it is:

bobcorn

Only when I unpacked it I noticed that it was microwave popcorn. I don’t own a microwave, and my anti-social tendencies have provided me with a rather low number of friends who do own one: zero.

In case you’re wondering. “Bob” is a new cell-phone company. Its claim to fame? Very cheap rates and a marketing budget the size of Albania’s GDP.

Carinthia, medieval

I’m back from the excursion, and I brought a shitload of pictures.

Click here to see the batch on my site’s own gallery, or click here to admire them from within Flickr (if you’re planning on leaving witty comments!).

I don’t think I’ve ever before learnt so much about anything in such a short period of time. And I don’t think I ever will again.

The weather as spectacular, which was nice most of the time and horrible some of the time. I don’t think I’ve ever perspired so much in such a short period of time.

In the end, it was a nice way to learn about the Middle Ages, late antiquity and just about all of Christianity’s saints. Those Carinthians sure are pious folk.

Gone for some

For the next five days, I’ll be on an excursion through the nether world of medieval Carinthia.

Naturally, I’ll be more or less offline. You can resume addressing your parchments to me on Sunday.

Farewell, and have a good week.

Fix me up

Maggi Fix
What is this? Well, while it may look like an ordinary pack of Chili con Carne base, it’s in fact much more than that. It’s yet another brainchild of a marketing division with money to burn. The product? A 15 minute loan.

I guess the initial meeting with the ad agency went like that:

Marketing hack: “We’ve got a new loan we want to promote. It’s a 15 minute loan.
Ad guy: Whoa, that’s really quite speedy.
Marketing hack: Speedy? As in Speedy Gonzales? Hahaha, you’re a genius! Here, have a cigarre, I’ll light it for you…WITH A 500 EURO BILL, HAHAHAHA!

And for the people who don’t watch TV, listen to the radio or read newspapers, they simply bought a whole lot of Chili con Carne base, slapped a sticker with Speedy onto it and now hand it out to unsuspecting future creditees.

I really should have gone into advertising.

Wibald’s curse

I’ve been trying for the last half hour to print out the article on Wibald of Stablo/Corvey from the online version of the International Encyclopaedia for the Middle Ages. Somehow Firefox suddenly goes bonkers when using the Encyclopedia. I’ve printed out and read dozens of articles from that resource in FF before, and it never posed a problem, but suddenly it does.

I tried it in Opera, and it seemed to work beautifully. Until I clicked on the link to the article on Wibald, that is. It then just crashed.

Now, Wibald, if you’re such a secretive guy and don’t like people reading information on you, you’re too late anyway. I found information on you inside the “Verfasserlexikon” already. You know, that reference book on all you medieval scribes. So, I know that you were basically about letters only, and that most of the business letters you wrote are of no real merit to us historians. No need trying to keep that from me.

So please, I’m now going to attempt to print out that article using Konqueror. Please let me, will ya? I need to get this presentation on you done!
